Tire Size
Knowing the size of your tires is the key to ordering the right size snow chains. Most tire sizes will be listed on the side of the tire. The number will usually look something like this: P215/60R16. The first number, in this case “215”, is the width of the tire in millimeters. The second number, “60”, is the Aspect Ratio. This is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width. The last number, “16”, is the diameter of the wheel in inches.
Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual
Before you buy any tire chains, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual. It will list the maximum width and height of the tires that can be used with the vehicle, as well as the maximum size of the chains. Once you know these numbers, you can narrow your search for the right chain.
There are two ways to measure a tire – diameter and width. Tire diameter is the height of the tire from one end to the other. To measure width, lay a straight-edge across the widest part of the tire tread, not including any raised lettering or design elements.
Once you have these measurements, you can start shopping for chains. Most retailers will sell chains in sets of two, so you’ll need to buy two sets if you want to chain all four tires.
Find your tire size on the sidewall of your tire
To find your tire size, look for a series of numbers on the sidewall of your tire that looks something like this: P215/65 R15 95H. Every tire has a “tire size” printed on its sidewall. This number is a measurement that indicates the width of your tire in millimeters, the height of your sidewall as a percentage of the width, and finally the diameter of the wheel (excluding any decorative trim) in inches. In this example, your tire has a width of 215 millimeters, a sidewall height of 65% of 215 millimeters, and a wheel diameter of 15 inches.
Chain Size
There are a few things you’ll need to know in order to determine what size snow chains you’ll need. You’ll need to know the size of your tires, the width of your tires, and the thickness of your tires. With those three measurements, you’ll be able to determine what size chains you’ll need.
Use a snow chain size chart
Before you purchase a set of chains, it’s important to know what size you need. Each tire has a unique size, so you can’t just buy any old chain and expect it to fit.
The first step is to look at the sidewall of your tire. You’ll see a series of numbers and letters that look something like this: P215/65R15. The number you want to pay attention to is the second one, in this case 65. This indicates the width of the tire in millimeters.
Once you know the width of your tire, consult a snow chain size chart like the one below. This will tell you what size chain you need for your specific tire width.
Tire width (mm) | Snow chain size
—————|—————–
145-195 | 6
195-225 | 8
225-265 | 10
265-305 | 12

Read the instructions that come with your chains
Most snow chains will come with detailed instructions on how to install them. These instructions will vary depending on the brand and model of chains you have, so it’s important that you read them carefully before attempting to install your chains.
You should also consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to install snow chains on your particular vehicle. Many newer vehicles have special requirements or prohibitions when it comes to using snow chains, so it’s important to be sure you are following the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions
Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Depending on the size of your tires and the type of chains, the process will vary. Generally, you’ll need to place the chains around the tire and then tighten them so they’re snug. Once they’re in place, you should be able to lightly tug on the chains and they shouldn’t come loose.
