MLA Formatting
MLA Formatting is a specific style guide that is used by many colleges and universities. The format is specific to writing essays and papers in the humanities. This style guide has specific requirements for font size, margin size, and line spacing.
Font Size
The recommended font size for MLA formatting is 12pt.
Margins
All margins–top, bottom, left, and right–should be 1 inch.
Line Spacing
MLA recommends that when you divide an essay into sections that you number those sections with an Arabic number and a period followed by a space and the section name. MLA also suggests that you type your last name before the page number in case the pages of your essay become separated (54).
Header
In MLA style, the header appears at the top of your paper. It includes your last name and the page number. The header should be flush with the left margin of the page.
MLA Paper
The MLA Format is a style of writing developed by the Modern Language Association. It is used for research papers in many high school and college English classes, as well as in some other humanities courses. MLA style is most often used in English and foreign language courses, but can be used in other courses as well.
Title Page
All papers must be double-spaced, and all margins — top, bottom, left, and right — should be one inch. The title page is the first page of your paper. The title should be centered on the page; if you have a long title, you can divide it between two lines in the center of the page. The title should be in standard title case: all major words should be capitalized, but prepositions and articles should not be unless they are the first or last word of the title. Immediately below the title, you should center your name — your first name, middle initial(s), and last name — followed by a space and then your instructor’s name, followed by a space and then the course number. For example:
John Q. Smith
Professor Jane Doe
English 101
In-Text Citations
When writing a paper in MLA format, you must use 12 point Times New Roman font throughout your entire document. You also must double space your entire paper, including both your heading and your Works Cited page.
Works Cited Page
The font size for the Works Cited page should be 12 pt.
