He left LSU early to pursue his NBA career and was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the first overall pick of the 1992 NBA draft. He quickly became one of the best centers in the league, winning Rookie of the Year in 1992–93 and leading his team to four consecutive 50-win seasons. After four years with Orlando, O’Neal signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers; they won three consecutive championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Amid tension between O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, O’Neal was traded to the Miami Heat prior to the 2004–05 season. Midway through 2005–06, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns where he spend two-and-a-half seasons before being dealt back to Miami in 2008. He spent two more seasons with Miami before signing as a free agent with Boston Celtics in 2010 for his second stint there for two years until retiring as a player after 19 seasons.

O’Neal has been a fifteen-time All-Star, All-Star Game MVP (2000), fifteen-time member of All-NBA Teams (First Team: 1994–1997; Second Team: 1998–1999; Third Team: 2000) led three teams to NBA Finals victories (Orlando Magic in 1995 over Houston Rockets; Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 over Indiana Pacers; Miami Heat 2006 over Dallas Mavericks), was voted MVP of both 1995 Finals and 2000 Finals winning Shaq three Finals MVP Awards which ties him with Magic Johnson for second most all time behind only Michael Jordan’s six awards—three of them were won while Shaq played on losing teams—and ranks fourth all time most postseason points scored behind only LeBron James (7th all time regular season scorer).
