Preemie

Preemie sizes are for newborns who weigh between 3 and 5½ pounds, and usually up to 20 inches long. Keep in mind that your preemie may not fit into these sizes for long—some preemies move into newborn sizes as early as 2 weeks old, while others may need preemie sizes for several months.

Newborn

Newborn clothes are designed to fit babies who weigh between five and eight pounds and are 18 to 21 inches long. If you’re not sure what size to buy, it’s always best to err on the side of too big rather than too small. Newborn clothes are often sold in sets that include everything from sleepers and undershirts to socks and hats.

0-3 Months

The average weight for a newborn is between 5-8 pounds, and the average height is between 18-22 inches. The best way to determine what size newborn clothes you need is to wait until your baby is born and take their specific measurements. However, most newborn clothes will be marked with a size range that reflects these averages.

0-3 months is the most common size for newborn clothing. This size range covers babies who are generally between 5-8 pounds and 18-22 inches long. This is a good size to start with if you don’t know your baby’s exact measurements, or if you want to be prepared for a range of sizes.

3-6 months is for babies who are generally between 8-12 pounds and 22-26 inches long. This size range covers babies who are starting to grow out of 0-3 month clothing, but are not quite ready for 6-9 month clothing. If you know your baby’s specific measurements, you may want to buy some 3-6 month clothing in addition to 0-3 month clothing.

6-9 months is for babies who are generally between 12-17 pounds and 26-28 inches long. This size range covers babies who have outgrown 3-6 month clothing and are ready for 9-12 month clothing. If you know your baby’s specific measurements, you may want to buy some 6_9 month clothing in addition to 3_6 month clothing.

3-6 Months

Newborn clothes usually fit babies who are between 8 to 12 pounds and 21 to 24 inches long. These babies are typically born between weeks 37 and 42. If your baby falls on the larger side, you can buy 0-3 month size clothes. It’s better to buy newborn clothes a little too big than too small, since babies grow quickly in their first few months.

6-9 Months

Newborn clothes usually fit babies up to about 8 to 12 pounds and 22 to 24 inches long. But every baby is different, so it’s best to buy according to your own baby’s size and weight rather than depend on the age or weight ranges listed on clothing labels.

As your baby grows and gains weight, you can start shopping for 6-9 month clothes. These will usually fit babies who weigh between 9 and 12 pounds and are 24 to 27 inches long. Again, it’s best to buy according to your own baby’s size rather than the age or weight ranges listed on labels.

Keep in mind that your baby will probably grow quickly, so you don’t need to buy a lot of clothes in each size. It’s also a good idea to wait until your baby actually needs a new size before you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe.

9-12 Months

Clothes for 9-12 month old babies are usually size 3-6. This is the age where babies start to become more active and therefore need clothes that are easier to move around in. Clothes in this size range will have snaps at the crotch instead of velcro so that they can be easily removed for diaper changes. Babies at this age will also start to eat solid foods, so bibs and smocks may also be needed.
