Decide the purpose of the curtains

Before you can choose a curtain rod, you need to decide the purpose of the curtains. Are they purely decorative? Do you need them to block out light? Will they be used to protect your furniture from sunlight? Do you need them to provide privacy?

The answer to this question will help you determine the type of curtain rod you need. Decorative curtains can be hung on a variety of curtain rods, from simple tension rods to more elaborate hardware. If you need light-blocking or privacy curtains, however, you’ll need a sturdier curtain rod that can support the weight of heavier fabrics.

Consider the type of window

There are a few factors to consider before purchasing a curtain rod. One important factor is the type of window you have. For example, if you have a bay window, you will need a different type of curtain rod than if you have a standard window. Another factor to consider is the size of the window. The size of the curtain rod should be proportional to the size of the window.

Determine the width of the curtain rod

The first step is to determine the width of the curtain rod. curtains are usually hung on a curtain rod that is at least 2 times the width of the window. So, if your window is 45 inches wide, you will need a curtain rod that is at least 90 inches wide. To get an idea of how wide 2 times the width of your window is, hold your tape measure at the edge of the window and stretch it out to the 2x mark.

Choose the right length for the curtain rod

The next thing you need to do is to measure the width of the window. Measure from the outer edge of one side of the window frame to the outer edge of the other side. Add at least 12” – 18” (30.5 – 46 cm) on each side of the window for adequate coverage, and to allow some fabric to be gathered when closed.

Now that you know how wide your window is, you need to choose a length for your curtain rod. To do this, you will need to decide how far above the window you want the rod to be installed, as well as how far below.

The most common installation height is about 4” (10 cm) above the window frame. This allows for about 2” (5 cm) of fabric above the rod, and 2” (5 cm) below.

If you want a more dramatic look, you can install the rod much higher, about 6” – 8” (15 – 20 cm) above the window frame. This allows for more fabric above the rod, which can create a fuller look when closed.

Once you have decided how high above the window you want your curtain rod to be installed, measure from that point down to where you want the bottom of your curtains to fall. Add at least 12” – 18” (30.5 – 46 cm) on each side of the window for adequate coverage, and to allow some fabric to be gathered when closed.

Select the right style for the curtain rod

There are many different styles of curtain rods available to choose from. The rod you select will be determined by the window treatment you want to hang, the weight of the curtains, and the look you want to achieve.

-If you want a decorative rod that is visible, choose a Rod Desyne or an Allen + Roth. These rods come in a variety of colors and finishes to match your decor.
-If you want a durable rod that can hold heavy curtains, choose an Eclipse or a Kenney. These brands offer rods that can hold up to 30 pounds.
-If you want a discreet rod that blends in with your window frame, choose an umbra or a graber. These rods are available in white or black and are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible.
