There is another type of fraction that is sometimes used, called a mixed fraction or mixed number. A mixed fraction is two numbers combined: a whole number and a proper fraction. For example, in our candy bar example above if each person got 2 candy bars and 1/5th of the total amount of candy bars (or 5/2), then this would be written as the mixed fraction 2 1/5 .
Mixed fractions are useful when we need to add or subtract fractions that have different denominators (bottom numbers). To do this, first we need to convert both fractions to have the same denominator. This process is called finding a common denominator or changing to equivalent fractions. Once they have the same denominator, we can add or subtract the top numbers only and leave the bottom numbers alone.
