What is a Decimal?
A decimal is a number that is used to express a value that is less than one whole number. The decimal point is used to show that a number is less than one. When a number is written with a decimal point, it is called a decimal.
Place Value
The decimal point is a way of indicating a break in the digits of a number. It separates the whole numbers from the fractional part of a number. In other words, it separates the ones, tens, hundreds,… places from the tenths, hundredths, thousandths,… places.
For example, look at the following number:
0.1
The decimal point is between the 1 and the 0. The 1 is in the tenths place and the 0 is in the hundredths place.
Tenths
Tenths are a way of representing numbers that are less than one. When we divide something into ten equal parts, each part is one tenth. The symbol for tenths is the decimal point. So, 0.1 (one tenth) can be written as 1/10 (one out of ten).
We can also use decimals to represent numbers that are greater than one. For example, the number 1.5 can be written as 15/10 (fifteen out of ten).
It is important to understand that when we move the decimal point to the right, the number gets smaller. For example, 0.01 (one hundredth) is smaller than 0.1 (one tenth).
Conversely, when we move the decimal point to the left, the number gets bigger. For example, 10 (ten) is bigger than 1 (one).
We can use decimals to represent any number, including numbers that are not whole numbers. For example, we can use decimals to represent fractions like 3/4 (three fourths) or 2/5 (two fifths).
What is 0.1 as a Fraction?
The fraction 0.1 is equal to one tenth. This fraction is commonly used in decimal form and is read as “one point one”. Many people choose to use the fraction 0.1 because it is easier to understand than the decimal form 1/10.
Tenths
The fraction 0.1 can be written as 1/10 or as tenths. Tenths are equal parts of a whole that are divided into 10 equal pieces. So, if you divide a pizza into 10 equal slices, each slice would be one-tenth, or 0.1, of the pizza.
